Iditarod 2011

Today was the start to the Iditarod, the 1049 mile sled dog race.  The sky was blue and the temps were in the high 30's.  We drove into town (4 miles) and got on the free shuttle which took us 35 miles to Willow.  This meant we got to ride on a school bus, pregame on the way there, skip paying for parking or gas, skip the traffic and police.  It was almost like we knew what we were doing.
Look at that crowd.  They call it the Super Bowl of Alaska
Feel the Rhythm. Feel the Rhyme.  Get on up.  It's Dogsled time.  What? Jamaica has a dogsled team?

"What part of Jamaica are you from?"
"Right next to tha beach mon"
We were surprised how many women were in the race.

  1. Four time winner, Susan Butcher, claimed Iditarod victories in 1986, 1987, 1988 and again in 1990. Susan retired from long distance racing after the 1993 race in order to start a family with husband Dave Monson, himself a Yukon Quest champion. Their first daughter, Margarith, was born in the spring of 1995. She was from Cambridge, she died in 2006 :(
