July 3rd

Are we ready to go fishing?  After a 220 mile drive we got to Ninilchik, AK and it was 46 degrees and raining.  We had got a screaming deal (60% off) a charter and booked it weeks ago.  Despite the weather we were excited to see what Halibut fishing was all about.
So there is no marina, just a tractor that lowers the boat into the ocean.

It was a 20-30 min boat ride.  Which we were please with (we have heard of some charters going 3-4 hours one way).
Neither of us got sea sick so we both were all smiles.

So we have a 4 lbs weight on our line, 2 monster circle hooks with bait.  Then we lower it 90 feet to the bottom and bounce it.  Our arms were getting tired.
Our first 2 spots did not produce a bite and I was getting tangled with some other folks on the boat (6 people including us).  Then we went to our third spot and everyone started to hook up.

There was also some Cod that was caught.
Halibut start life like a regular fish (swimming upright).  But then the lay on their sides and feed off the bottom of the ocean, this is when the left eye actually starts to migrate and eventually ends up on the top of the head.  The top of the fish is dark colored (so it will be hidden from prey) however, the underside of the Halibut is bright white)

We caught more fish than we could count but you can only keep 2 per day.
Our captain filleting our catch.  Each Halibut has 4 cuts and then the "cheek meat"
